What Is the Musical Evita About?
Evita is based on the true story of actress, activist and Argentinian political leader Eva Perón. From humble beginnings in poverty-stricken Junín to a career as a singer, actress and model and Eva’s marriage to Argentine president Juan Perón, Evita follows controversial and divisive Eva across the decades. Eva was heavily involved in the policies and work of her husband, and is considered by many to be one of the world’s first major political celebrities.
The History of Evita the Musical
Evita first premiered in 1978 and is considered a musical theatre classic, in part due to its iconic score, which includes hits such as “Dont Cry for Me Argentina”, “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Oh What A Circus”. The musical has been revived countless times over the years, winning multiple Olivier, Drama Desk and Tony Awards, and made history as the first ever British musical to receive the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1980. Evita was adapted into a smash hit movie in 1996, starring Madonna in the title role. The movie garnered multiple Academy Award nominations, snatching the trophy for Best Original Song for “You Must Love Me”, which was added for the film.
Lloyd’s “stripped-down, super-sleek, contemporary” (Arts Desk) production revival premiered at the Regent’s Park Theatre in 2019, earning an Olivier nomination and taking the win for the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Director and the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical. Lloyd later revived the production in the West End starring Zegler, adapting the production for indoor staging and utilising the venues exterior balcony for “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” - using cameras to broadcast the performance of this song inside the theatre, while Zegler sang to audience in the street, in a controversial and bold move - an element that will not be transferred with the NYC production, due to safety concerns. The production also won two Oliviers, including Best Actress for Zegler, who was making her UK stage debut.

The Creative Team of Evita on Broadway

Lloyd is the director of the Jamie Lloyd Company, and previous credits include Romeo and Juliet with Tom Holland, Sunset Boulevard with Nicole Scherzinger, and Much Ado About Nothing with Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell.
Music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with book and Lyrics by Tim Rice. The pair are long-term collaborators, whose other works together include Jesus Christ Superstar, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, best known for composing iconic musicals including Cats, Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express and Phantom of the Opera, is one of only twenty-one people internationally to hold an EGOT, which means he has won (multiple) Emmy, Tony, Oscar and Grammy awards. Lloyd Webber’s other accolades include several Olivier, Ivor Novello and Brit Awards.
