    Even the smallest of victories can feel huge in brand-new musical How to Dance in Ohio! Based on the Peabody Award-winning HBO documentary, this uplifting story about seven autistic young adults preparing for their spring formal is playing at Barrymore Theatre on Broadway.

    This heart-filled new musical is set in a group counseling center in Columbus, Ohio, where seven autistic young people are getting ready for their spring formal dance. This rite of passage for American teenagers is going to break open their routines and set them on a path of hilarious and heartbreaking encounters, as the courage to step out into the world is celebrated - whether big or small.

    The Award-winning Documentary On Stage

    How to Dance in Ohio the documentary first aired on HBO in 2015, with three young women - Meredith, Jessica and Caroline - as the main subjects of the documentary. It was a hit with critics and audiences, who hailed it “touching” and “it's heartening to see one that accentuates the positive so much” (Hollywood Reporter).

    It went on to win the prestigious Peabody Award, and now its story is delivering heart and humor in the center of New York City.

    How to Dance in Ohio Creative Team

    Alexandra Shiva’s documentary was adapted into a musical by writer Rebekah Greer Melocik (book & lyrics) and composer Jacob Yandura (music). It was originally set to be directed by Broadway legend Harold Prince (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Follies, The Phantom of the Opera), but following his death in 2019 Sammi Cannold directed the show’s world premiere at Syracuse Stage.

    Now at the Barrymore Theatre, it marks the Broadway debut for its creative team, as well as several original cast members. The cast includes Caesar Samayoa (Come From Away) as Dr. Emilio Amigo, Desmond Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei as Caroline, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Conor Tague as Tommy, Ashley Wool as Jessica and Imani Russell as Mel.
