Lucille Lortel Award winner Jocelyn Bioh’s latest play is a smart, deft and moving story about community and identity, making its debut at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre this year.

About Jaja’s African Hair Braiding

Jaja’s hair salon in Harlem is the place to go. Head inside and you’ll see a lively group of West African immigrant braiders getting to work. They’re experts at crafting masterpieces on top of women’s heads, and they’re popular too. Over the course of one stifling summer’s day, love blooms, dreams blossom and secrets are shared. Below the surface, the precarious nature of their lives is always simmering, and it is about to boil over. Soon, this tight-knit community must confront what it means to be an outsider on the edge of a place they call home.

Jaja’s African Hair Braiding Creative Team

This witty and touching new play is written by Ghanaian-American playwright Jocelyn Bioh. Bioh’s satirical comedy School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play won the 2018 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, and her other works include Nollywood Dreams.

Bioh received huge praise for School Girls, with critics on both sides of the pond hailing it a “gleeful African makeover of an American genre” (New York Times) and a “clever comedy [that] leaves a stinging afterburn” (The Guardian UK). Audiences can expect even more of her smart writing and skillful handling of complex themes - all layered with witty and rounded characters that spring off the stage - in Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.

The show is directed in New York by Whitney White. White is an Obie Award-winning director whose credits include Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, for all the women who thought they were Mad Off-Broadway and The Amen Corner at Shakespeare Theatre DC.

Some funny bits. Great set! Sometimes I wish there were captions because I missed some of the lines either because of the heavy accents used or the audience laughing.
