About Mother Play on Broadway

In 1962, just outside Washington D.C. matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage kids Carl and Martha as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis is very opinionated, and she knows exactly what her children need to do to succeed in life. If they disagree and choose a different path… well, that’s their lookout. Fortified by gin and cigarettes, the family endures and survives the world as it changes around them, in a play that reveals the boundless, universal truth of family and forgiveness.

Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress Jessica Lange stars as Phyllis in this surreal, farcical and deeply tender play. She needs little introduction as one of the most iconic working actresses in the USA, but to remind audiences, her credits include the movies Tootsie and Blue Sky, TV series Grey Gardens and American Horror Story and stage productions A Streetcar Named Desire and Long Day’s Journey into Night.

Lange is joined in Mother Play by Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) as Carl and Celia Keenan-Bolger, who won a Tony Award for her performance as Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Creative Team

Mother Play is Paula Vogel’s most recent work, and a follow-up to her hugely acclaimed dramas How I Learned To Drive, Indecent and The Baltimore Waltz. She won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for How I Learned To Drive, and is known for her confrontational, bold writing that tackles controversial topics and thorny relationships. This brand new play from Vogel is directed by Tina Landau.
