Explosive, exciting and utterly compelling, Oedipus is both a masterful dissection of contemporary politics and an edge-of-your-seat thriller - secure your tickets today!

What is the play Oedipus about?

It’s election night, and as the clock counts down, the polls promise a landslide success for political giant Oedipus. The hardened statesman has run a gruelling campaign trail and is eager to revel in the hard-earned spoils of victory with his wife Jocasta and their beautiful children. But when a dig about his background from a political rival prompts Oedipus to unearth his birth certificate, what follows is a sequence of events that can’t be undone. Prophecies come to light, past crimes are revealed, and truths begin to unfold - with tragic results. Set in real time as Oedipus and his family await the election results, director and writer Robert Icke’s brand new production transports the Greek tragedy thoroughly into the modern day, keeping the ancient names but updating the language.

Icke’s production originally premiered in Dutch, performed by Ivo van Hove's company Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, in 2018. The production was later translated into English and transferred to Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End, where it was received with critical acclaim, winning three Oliviers at the 2025 awards. Oedipus on Broadway “glints with a deadly sharpness” (Time Out) - you won’t want to miss it.
