What Is the Musical Purple Rain About?
Set in Minneapolis in 1984, as a new era of music television is about to begin, one performer is on the brink of overnight stardom. A fictional story set around an up-and-coming rock musician called "The Kid", his talent could be the frontman his band needs to achieve success. But as he contends with a tumultuous home environment, a rival band, and a budding romance, "The Kid" will have to fight for his future and earn his place in the spotlight.
Purple Rain features more than 20 of Prince’s most iconic hits, including “I Would Die 4 U”, “Take Me With You”, and “The Beautiful Ones.”
The History of Purple Rain Musical
Purple Rain is based on a film of the same title in 1984, alongside an accompanying soundtrack. The brand-new musical adaptation of Purple Rain heads onto Broadway in Spring 2027. Always destined to head to New York, the musical had a run at the State Theatre in Minneapolis in November 2025. That production was directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, a Tony Award nominee, and choreographed by Emmy Award winner Ebony Williams.

Purple Rain is adapted from the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.
Tony Award-nominee Sahmee Ali (Buena Vista Social Club) will direct. The creative team also includes a book by playwright and screenwriter Peter Duchan (Dogfight), a music team led by Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb (MJ The Musical), and choreography by Emmy Award winner Ebony Williams (Sneakerella). Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, who worked with Prince for years as bandmates and musical collaborators, will act as Music Advisers.
