What Is the Musical The Fantasticks About?
Two neighbouring mothers in a small town hatch a mischievous plot to make their sons fall in love by developing a phoney feud. But real love is never exactly as it appears in the fairy tales - will the boys' budding relationship continue to bloom in the face of reality?

The History of The Fantasticks
The Fantasticks is based on the 1894 play Les Romanesques by Edmond Rostand, and first premiered Off-Broadway in 1960. The show initially ran off-Broadway for 42 years, making it the world's longest-running musical, before it closed in 2002. The show’s simplistic staging and small cast size have made it incredibly popular for regional and school productions. The Fantasticks was awarded a Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre in 1991, and is internationally renowned, having played in over 60 countries and all 50 US states. The show has received several revivals as well as a movie adaptation in 1995, and has had many notable cast members over its decades-long lifespan, including Liza Minnelli, F. Murray Abraham, Glenn Close, and Kristin Chenoweth.
The show has undergone several script changes and iterations over the years. This newly reimagined version was reworked by original creator Tom Jones in 2022, and premiered at the Flint Repertory Theatre in Michigan. The revival flips the original script on its head, recasting the rival parents as two mothers, and the central couple as a same-sex relationship - Matt and Lewis.

The Fantasticks has a book and lyrics by Tom Jones, with music by Harvey Schmidt. Schmidt (1929 - 2018) and Jones (1928 - 2023) were long-term collaborators, who also worked together on musicals 110 in the Shade, Celebration, Roadside, and I Do! I Do!. Jones and Schmidt were both Tony nominees and inductees of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Tony winner Christopher Gattelli directs and choreographs. Gattelli’s credits include Schmigadoon! on Broadway, Death Becomes Her the Musical, and Newsies.
