After a devastating car accident that claims his parents’ lives, 23-year-old veterinary student Jacob drops out of college and jumps onto a moving train without caring where it takes him. He disembarks in the middle of the remarkable Benzini Brothers traveling circus, and soon he has found a new home, a new direction beyond his wildest dreams.In his new role as an elephant caretaker, Jacob meets beautiful performer Marlena, and the pair’s romance soon blossoms. But Marlena’s husband, the cruel and manipulative August, is standing in the way of their new life.
A Unique Spectacle on Broadway
Sara Gruen’s acclaimed novel Water for Elephants is a vivid 20th-century circus story populated by larger-than-life characters and animals. On stage, it is pure spectacle and romance, with exhilarating acrobatics, innovative stagecraft and puppets, soaring songs, and pitch-perfect performances.The show is directed by Tony Award nominee Jessica Stone (Kimberly Akimbo), with a book by Tony Award nominee Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) and a beautiful score - including songs “Wild” and “Anywhere” - by PigPen Theatre Co.
It arrives in New York following a world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in 2023, with cast members Grant Gustin (The Flash) and Isabelle McCalla (Shucked; The Prom) starring as Jacob and Marlena. The cast also includes Paul Alexander Nolan (Parade; Slave Play) as August.

A delightful time. I was a fan of the “circus” acts. The use of puppets was tasteful in my opinion. Book could’ve used more work, but it’s one of the more solid original musicals of this season
