What is the play An Ideal Husband about?

“Questions are never indiscreet. Answers sometimes are.”

Politician Sir Robert Chiltern is on the rise. A man of impeccable taste, he appears to have it all - a loving wife, magnificent clothes, a wonderful house and most importantly, a spotless reputation. That is, until the meddling Lady Cheverley enters the scene. An old school rival of Robert’s wife, and the widow of one of Robert’s old colleagues, Lady Cheverley has a long-held grudge, a flair for the dramatic and a whole load of secrets ready to spill. With the threat of scandal on the horizon, just how far will Robert go to keep his reputation unblemished?

An Ideal Husband first premiered in 1895 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. The show was critically acclaimed and continues to be popular today. It has since received many revivals and adaptations, with notable productions including the 2018 Vaudeville Theatre staging starring Father-son duo Edward and Freddie Fox, and the 1999 film adaptation starring Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett and Rupert Everett.
