The raunchy and hilarious Tony-winning puppet musical - “Sesame Street for grown-ups” (EW) - returns to the West End.

Avenue Q in London!

Come home to Avenue Q as the Tony-winning, boundary-pushing musical returns to London’s West End this Spring. This raunchy, raucous musical is “Sesame Street for grown-ups” (Entertainment Weekly) and tells the story of bunch of dissatisfied friends, both puppet and human, who live together in the titular borough of NYC. Avenue Q is an equal opportunity offender - with love, sexuality, and privilege all in the firing line. The musical comes to the Shaftesbury Theatre, in the heart of Covent Garden, for the first time in over two decades - you won’t want to miss it, read our review of Avenue Q secure your tickets today!

What is the musical Avenue Q about?

Set in a shabby outer borough of New York City, Avenue Q is a raucously funny and surprisingly heartfelt coming-of-age musical where humans and puppets live side by side. The story follows Princeton, a bright-eyed (puppet) college graduate who moves into Avenue Q with big dreams and a tiny bank account. As he tries to figure out his purpose in life, he meets a host of colourful neighbours, including Kate Monster, an earnest teaching assistant; Rod, a closeted banker and Nicky, his slacker roommate; landlord and former child-star Gary Oldman (yes, the Gary Oldman) and Trekkie Monster, who’s definitely not your average children’s puppet!

As the characters navigate adulthood, love, friendship, and disappointment, Avenue Q balances outrageous humour with relatable moments. From job-hunting to heartbreak, it captures the awkward hilarity of trying to grow up when you’re not quite sure how. With songs like “It Sucks to Be Me”, “There’s a Fine Fine Line”, “Schadenfreude”, “If You Were Gay”, and “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist,” the show isn’t afraid to tackle taboo topics with tongue firmly in cheek.

The History of Avenue Q

Avenue Q premiered off-Broadway in 2003, winning a Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle award, before transferring to the John Golden Theatre on Broadway later that same year. The musical went on to win three Tony awards in 2004, including the award for Best Musical, which the edgy, underdog production controversially won over the smash-hit Wicked. The musical ran until 2009 on Broadway, when it transferred back off-Broadway and ran for a further ten years. The show has since toured internationally and across the United States. In 2006, Avenue Q premiered in the West End and ran for five years at various different venues. While an anniversary concert was held in 2024 to celebrate the show’s 18th anniversary, this brand new revival marks the first full run of the show in London in almost two decades.

I’ve never seen this show before, and I only listened to the songs for the first time this morning before the show. I now see I’ve been missing out! I have to wonder how someone came up with the idea of turning the Muppets (other puppet shows are av Read more

Great show making a comeback to London. First saw this around 20 years ago at the Noel Coward theatre. Some great songs and always funny to hear adult themed jokes coming from puppets.
