Noel Coward Theatre

James Graham’s acclaimed political play transfers to the West End, starring Zachary Quinto and David Harewood as Vidal and Buckley Jr.

A debate that transformed US politics

Zachary Quinto and David Harewood star in the West End transfer of James Graham’s Best of Enemies play, a blazing political drama about a game-changing US debate.

1968 was a year of huge upheaval for the US, marked by anti-war and civil rights protests. As two men battled to become the next President, the public's attention turned to their television screens. Conservative William F Buckley Jr. and liberal Gore Vidal traded insults in a series of debates broadcast to an already divided nation - and became the blueprint for modern day political campaigns.

Created by one of our foremost political playwrights, Best of Enemies premiered at the Young Vic Theatre in 2021. It is based on Morgan Neville and Robert Gordon's documentary and directed by Jeremy Herrin (This House).

James Graham’s impressive writing credits include BBC drama Sherwood, and multiple Olivier Award-nominated plays including Labour of Love and Ink, about the rise of Rupert Murdoch.

Casting for Best of Enemies in London is led by Zachary Quinto as Vidal and David Harewood as Buckley Jr.

I went into this show with low expectations as I don't know anything that can be better than it's predecessor DEH. I didn't know it was a comedy, so laughing was a nice surprise. The comedy doesn't overshadow the important issues that are addressed w Read more

Incredible show. Cleverly written, razor sharp and witty. David Harewood gives the most extraordinary performance, playing a character that must have been difficult to inhabit given the prejudices of the time.
