What Is Hay Fever About?
Described as a cross between a high farce and a satirical comedy, Hay Fever follows Judith, a retired actor who is idling away with her family at their country home. Her husband, David, is a reclusive novelist, and her children, Sorrel and Simon, are failing to launch their own aspirations.
When each member of the Bliss family invites an unexpected guest to their home for the weekend, the house quickly erupts into unforgettable chaos. Over the course of three acts, the Bliss family seem to manage to bombard their guests with activities and conversation, who are lukewarm to their advances. Judith is the most ridiculous of them all, making wild exaggerations and exclamations and even performing an overdramatic faint. Will the poor guests be able to escape this family of lunatics with their dignity intact?
The History of Hay Fever
Hay Fever is one of Noel Coward’s most beloved plays, which first debuted in the West End in 1925. Subsequent revivals on the stage happened over the years across London, including a run at The Old Vic in the 1960s. The play has also been adapted for television over the years. The most recent production of Hay Fever was directed by Lindsay Posner in 2015 at the Duke of York’s Theatre, where it played after a debut at the Theatre Royal Bath.
