The Phantom of the Opera
Arguably one of Lloyd Webber’s most well-known and beloved works, Phantom has lyrics by Charles Hart, with a book by Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe and additional lyrics by Stilgoe. This sung-through musical, based on Gaston Leroux’s Gothic novel, tells the story of Christine, an ingenue Soprano, and the mysterious Phantom, a disfigured musical genius who lives underneath the Paris Opera House and develops an obsession with her. Phantom won both an Olivier and a Tony upon its debuts in the UK and US, in 1986 and 1988 respectively, and received a film adaptation in 2004 starring Gerard Butler. The second longest-running show in the West End, Phantom celebrates its 40th anniversary in October 2026.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Another Bible-based story by Webber and long-time collaborator, lyricist Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar began life as a 1970 rock concept album inspired by the story of Jesus’ last days, as told in the Gospels of the Passion. Deliberately anachronistic and full of rock flair, the musical is completely sung through. Jesus Christ Superstar debuted in London in 1972, and became the longest-running West End musical until the title was nabbed by Cats in 1989. There have been several notable productions, including a 2026 concert staging at the Hollywood Bowl, starring Cynthia Erivo as Jesus and Adam Lambert as Judas, two award-winning film adaptations, and an Olivier-winning 2016 staging at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, which was revived in 2026.

Sherlock Holmes and The 12 Days of Christmas
This production is a departure for Lloyd Webber, as it is a festive play rather than a musical! The show tells a brand new story set in the universe of the world’s most famous detective, in which Holmes and Watson must solve a spate of murders in the West End that are mysteriously linked to the “Twelve Days of Christmas” song. The play is written by Humphrey Ker and David Reed, of comedy sketch group The Penny Dreadfuls, and features new songs by Lloyd Webber and long-time collaborator Tim Rice. The show premiered at the Birmingham Rep in 2025, and transfers to London for Christmas 2026.

Cats
Cats is based on T.S Eliot’s whimsical poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and tells the story of a tribe of Cats, as they gather to decide who among them will ascend to “the Heaviside Layer” and be reborn. Lyrics are drawn from Eliot’s poems, with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and Trevor Nunn. The musical debuted in London in 1981 and on Broadway the following year, winning at both the Olivier and Tony Awards. The show was adapted as a (somewhat divisive!) film, starring Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and Ian McKellen in 2019.

Evita
Another collaboration with Rice, Evita was another sung-through musical initially released as a rock concept album. Based on real-life actress, activist and political figure Eva Peron, it follows her from humble beginnings to her marriage to the president of Argentina. The album was released in 1976, with the show debuting in London in 1978, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Its Broadway debut made history, as the first British musical to win the Tony for Best Musical. Evita’s most notable iterations are the 1996 film starring Madonna, and Jamie Lloyd’s gritty 2026 Olivier-winning revival starring Rachel Zegler, which transfers to Broadway in February 2027.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Joseph marked the first public collaboration between Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice (the pair’s actual first collab, The Likes of Us, wouldn’t be publicly performed until 2005). This family-friendly musical retelling of the Bible story follows favoured son Joseph, whose jealous brothers sell him into slavery to the Pharaoh of Egypt – where he discovers his prophetic dreams may offer an escape. Joseph has had many outings since its debut in 1968, including Tony and Olivier-nominated revivals in London and New York, and plenty of celebs have played the roles of Joseph and Pharaoh, including Donnie Osmond, Jason Donovan and Lee Mead. Joseph frequently tours the UK and is a firm favourite with schools and amateur theatre groups.

Starlight Express
Lloyd Webber collaborated again with lyricist Richard Stilgoe on Starlight Express, with revisions by director Trevor Nunn. The show has been revised several times since its 1984 premiere, with later productions also featuring lyrics by Don Black, David Yazbek, Nick Coler and Lauren Aquilina. This high-energy, Olivier-nominated musical was initially based on the The Railway Series books by The Rev. W. Awdry (which also inspired Thomas the Tank Engine), but later developed into its own story, about a boy who dreams of a thrilling race between a group of anthropomorphic steam trains. Starlight Express is known for its stunt-skating choreo (the entire show is performed on roller skates!), Tony-winning costume design and impressive racetrack sets.

Aspects of Love
Based on the 1955 novel of the same name by David Garnett, this musical has lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart. The show follows actress Rose Vibert and the various suitors and different types of relationships she has over the years, exploring familial, romantic and parental love. The show premiered in the UK in 1989, starring Michael Ball as Rose’s main love interest, Alex Dillingham. A Broadway transfer followed in 1990, earning six Tony nominations. Aspects of Love is best known for its song “Love Changes Everything”, which was also released as a best-selling single, sung by Ball.

Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard is based on the 1950 Billy Wilder film of the same name. The show premiered in 1993 and has a book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black. Sunset Boulevard follows Joe Gillis, a struggling writer, who is drawn into a disturbing, co-dependent relationship with fading Hollywood star Norma Desmond. The show has had many productions since its premiere, most notably two huge Tony-winning revivals: the 1994 revival starring Glenn Close as Norma Desmond, and a 2023/24 production directed by Jamie Lloyd starring Nicole Scherzinger, which also won a staggering 11 Olivier Awards.

The Woman in White
The Woman in White is based on Wilkie Collins’ 1860 novel of the same name, and elements of the 1866 Dickens short story The Signal-Man, and has a book by Charlotte Jones with lyrics by David Zippel. The show premiered in 2004, starring OG Phantom Michael Crawford, and ran for 19 months, making it one of Lloyd Webber’s shortest-running shows – though the musical still earned both Olivier and Tony nominations upon its UK and US premieres! This haunting gothic musical follows Drawing Master Walter Hartridge, who is drawn into the world of two sisters after seeing a mysterious woman in white at a train station.

The Wizard of Oz
This musical adaptation of the iconic 1939 film and the original book series by L Frank Baum features a book by Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams, lyrics by E.Y Harburg and additional lyrics by Tim Rice. Interestingly, Lloyd Webber was not the sole composer for this production, which features music by Harold Arlen and additional music by Lloyd Webber. It premiered in 2011 starring Michael Crawford as the Wizard and Hannah Waddingham as the Wicked Witch of the West, alongside Danielle Hope as Dorothy, who was selected for the role after winning reality TV show Over the Rainbow.

Stephen Ward
Lloyd Webber returned to politics in this musical, with book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black, based on the 1963 Profumo affair. The scandal involved War Minister John Profumo and socialite Stephen Ward, who introduced Profumo to Christine Keeler, who became his mistress while she was also entangled with a Russian spy. The show premiered in 2013, but the opening night was marred by West End drama when the adjacent Apollo Theatre roof collapsed, and many theatregoers left during the interval to observe the incident.

School of Rock
This rock musical features lyrics by Glenn Slater with a book by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. Based on the 2003 Jack Black film of the same name, the show premiered on Broadway in 2015, starring Alex Brightman and former Christine Sierra Boggess. School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a directionless singer-songwriter who accidentally becomes a teacher, and forms a band with his class to try and win The Battle of the Bands. School of Rock transferred to the West End in 2016, with David Fynn in the lead role. The show was nominated for both Tony and Olivier Awards, winning the Olivier for Outstanding Achievement in Music for the three children’s bands who performed live at each show!

Cinderella
This musical featured lyrics by David Zippell with a book by Wuthering Heights and Saltburn’s Emerald Fennell. Loosely based on the well-known fairy tale, the show debuted in 2021 starring Olivier Award winner Carrie Hope Fletcher in the lead role, and adds themes of beauty shaming and being true to yourself to the classic story of an impoverished girl who falls in love with a prince after attending a ball with help from her fairy godmother. The show transferred to Broadway in 2023 under the name Bad Cinderella. The cast recording, released in, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
