What is The Last Laugh about?

Three comedy heroes sit in a backstage dressing room, chewing the fat. Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse are true comedy greats, but what exactly makes someone funny? Is it a natural gift - a funny bone, for example - or is it down to hard graft? Packed with hilarious gags and touching anecdotes, The Last Laugh is a funny show about the art of being funny, as the lives of Morecambe, Monkhouse and Cooper are reimagined and revived live on stage.

The Last Laugh Edinburgh Reviews

Where better to premiere this touching comedy show than at one of the biggest theatre and comedy festivals in the world? The Last Laugh opened at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2024 to great reviews. Critics praised its “superlative comedy performances” (The Stage) and “witty, clever” (Broadway Baby) script. This is “an exquisite tribute” (On The Mic) that dives into what made these comedy greats tick, and why we love them so much even now.

Cast and Creative Team

Award-winning scriptwriter and presenter Paul Hendy adapts and directs his 2017 short film for the stage, and stars the “note-perfect cast” (Chortle) of Bob Golding as Eric Morecambe, Simon Cartwright as Bob Monkhouse, and Damian Williams as Tommy Cooper. The trio performed the same roles at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to huge acclaim, and audiences will love seeing them bring the mannerisms, quirks and humour of these three comedy giants to life.

Lovely to see an old fashioned box set. Lighting was very good. The actors look and sound and act like them. The jokes are from their joke book. Their timing was immaculate. We now have a Q&A session with the 3 actors after a break
