Mark Addy and Jenna Russell star in this “pitch-perfect” (The Times) new musical, based on the bestselling novel.

The Harold Fry Musical in London

Following a sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre, “pitch perfect” (The Times) new musical The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry transfers to the Theatre Royal Haymarket near Trafalgar Square. Adapted by Rachel Joyce from her own bestselling novel, this new British musical features an original score by chart-topping indie musician Passenger.

Funny, profound, and deeply moving, Harold Fry follows one man’s spontaneous decision to walk the length of England in hopes of reconnecting with someone from his past - and himself. Katy Rudd directs a brilliant cast led by Mark Addy and Jenna Russell in a story that proves it’s never too late to begin again. Book your tickets now for the best view of this remarkable journey.

What is The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry about?

Harold Fry is living a quiet, ordinary life in Devon when a letter arrives from an old friend, Queenie Hennessy, who is terminally ill. He sets out to post a reply… only to keep walking, convinced that if he keeps going, she will stay alive. Without proper shoes or preparation, Harold begins an unplanned, cross-country journey from Kingsbridge to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Along the way, he meets strangers who shape his outlook, encounters small acts of kindness, and unearths regrets and memories that have been buried for years.

Back home, his wife Maureen is left to navigate her own grief and confusion. As Harold’s pilgrimage unfolds, hers does too. Blending humour, hope and heartbreak, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is a story of redemption, resilience, and the gentle power of change.

From Page to Stage: Harold’s Journey Finds New Life

Rachel Joyce’s novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, was published in 2012 to critical acclaim and went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. Her decision to adapt her own work for the stage proved a hit with audiences when the production premiered at Chichester Festival Theatre in spring 2025. The Times awarded it five stars, celebrating its “ravishing score” and “remarkable emotional clarity”, while What’s On Stage praised the “exceptional cast” and Sussex World declared it “one of the crowning glories of this year’s Festival”.

Now, the musical moves to London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for a limited season.
