What is the play Art About?
In Art, three long-time friends—Serge, Marc, and Yvan—find their relationship tested when Serge purchases an expensive, all-white painting. Marc is baffled by the purchase, leading to a heated debate about art, value, and personal taste. Yvan, caught in the middle, attempts to mediate the escalating conflict. This witty and incisive play delves into the nature of friendship and the subjective value we assign to art and relationships.
Art premiered in Paris in 1994 and quickly became a sensation. The English-language version, translated by Christopher Hampton, debuted in London's West End in 1996, winning the Olivier Award for Best Comedy. The play made its Broadway debut in 1998, earning the Tony Award for Best Play and running for over 600 performances. This 2025 revival marks the first time Art returns to Broadway since its original run, bringing fresh energy and perspective to Reza's timeless exploration of art and friendship.
