What is the musical Beaches about? 

Beaches: The Musical brings to life the sweeping tale of friendship between two extraordinary women whose bond endures through decades of change, joy, heartbreak and triumph. 

Charting the vibrant, “oil‑and‑water” friendship between vivacious actress Cee Cee and elegant, wealthy Bertie, the show follows the women over thirty years- from their first meeting as children to becoming pen‑pals, roommates, romantic rivals, and steadfast confidantes. The women’s journey explores themes of resilience, identity, ambition and the enduring power of sisterhood and “illuminates the lifelong love that exists between the two best friends.” (Intermission Magazine). 

Beaches features a blend of musical styles, which shift from decade to decade, to reflect the passing of time - including the smash hit theme song from the movie "Wind Beneath My Wings". Touchingly vulnerable, joyful and moving, Beaches: The Musical celebrates the people who profoundly shape our lives.

The History of Beaches: A New Musical

Beaches draws its roots from Iris Rainer Dart’s bestselling 1985 novel, which was adapted into a smash-hit movie in 1988, starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, whose performances became iconic. The movie’s theme song, "Wind Beneath My Wings", performed by Midler, won the Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990.

This stage adaptation has been years in the making, with early productions beginning in regional theatres before its sold‑out international premiere in 2024 at Theatre Calgary, Alberta, starring Vosk and Barrett to critical acclaim. The production will also launch a multi‑city national tour following its Broadway engagement.

The Creative Team of Beaches 

The show features a book by Iris Rainer Dart, author of the original Beaches novel, and Thom Thomas (A Moon To Dance By), with lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart and music by Grammy winner Mike Stoller (Smokey Joe’s Café, Stand by Me) in collaboration with David Austin (Girlhood, A Dead Man’s Apartment).

Lonny Price (Sweeney Todd, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill) directs, with Matt Cowart (Sunset Boulevard, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill) serving as co-director. 

Choreography is by Jennifer Rias (The Music Man, Ain’t Too Proud), with orchestrations by Charlie Rosen (Some Like It Hot, Be More Chill). The design team includes scenic design by James Noone (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill), costume design by Tracy Christensen (Souvenir, Carousel), lighting design by Ken Billington (Chicago, Sweeney Todd), sound design by Kai Harada (Kimberly Akimbo, The Band’s Visit), and projection design by David Bengali (Allegiance, The Kite Runner).
