After sweetening up audiences in London’s West End, Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory spreads the joy on Broadway. Featuring songs from the movie, this story about friendship, kindness and food plays at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
Charlie Bucket has grown up in the shadow of the mysterious Wonka Factory, living on the breadline but dreaming of delicious chocolate and sweet confectionary. But when the enigmatic Willy Wonka declares the doors to the factory open, Charlie has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get inside and experience a world beyond his wildest imagination. Armed with a Golden Ticket, one humble boy and four not-so-pleasant children find themselves on a magical ride along the chocolate river, past Oompa-Loompas and up the Great Glass Elevator. But amidst all the mesmerizing sights, smells and tastes, one question remains: why did Wonka open the doors to the factory?
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway features original music and lyrics from Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman as well as songs from the movie; playwright David Greig (Europe, Dunsinane) provides the book. Taking over as director from Sam Mendes is Jack O’Brien, who won a Tony Award for Best Director for Hairspray (2003). Original set designer Mark Thompson also offers a new look for the Broadway transfer.
Casting includes Jake Ryan Flynn, Ryan Foust and Ryan Sell alternating as Charlie, alongside Christian Borle (Legally Blonde, Something Rotten!) as Willy Wonka and Tony Award winner John Rubinstein (Pippin, Children of a Lesser God) as Grandpa Joe.
Hum along to “Pure Imagination” and try not to rustle your sweet wrappers; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre is a phantasmagorical delight to get your teeth into.
