What Is the Play The Imaginary Invalid About?

Hypochondriac Argan indulges his every ache, pain, and ailment - to the degree that, to save on medical bills, he hatches a scheme to marry his daughter, Angelique, to a doctor. But being a doctor's wife is not the life Angelique has envisioned for herself, and she has another beau in mind, and Angelique and the servants must quickly devise a series of madcap schemes to scupper Argan's plans. Will the hypocondiac’s hijinks succeed in securing him a live-in doctor, or will true love win out?

The History of The Imaginary Invalid

Moliere’s final play, The Imaginary Invalid or Le malade imaginaire in the original French, premiered in 1673 at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal, Paris. Moliere actually played the title role himself upon the play’s premiere - ironically, he was gravely ill at the time, and collapsed only four performances into the play’s run. Moliere insisted on finishing the performance, but sadly died just hours later. Considered to be one of Moliere’s masterworks, the play originated as a three-act comédie-ballet with dance sequences as musical interludes, but has frequently been performed as more of a ‘straight’ play. The Imaginary Invalid premiered on Broadway in 1917 and has been performed internationally with many different translations and adaptations.
