What is the musical Picnic at Hanging Rock about?

On Valentine’s Day 1900, at the elite Appleyard College for Young Ladies, a group of teenage schoolgirls head out on a picnic to the imposing geological formation known as Hanging Rock (or Ngannelong in some Aboriginal Australian languages). Among them and their teachers, three girls - full of youthful promise and curiosity - vanish into the landscape without explanation. Those left behind must search for answers, while the world they knew unravels. This new musical re‑imagines that event through a modern lens, weaving in a compelling First Nations Australian perspective and giving voice to those who were historically silent.

History of Picnic at Hanging Rock

Picnic at Hanging Rock began life as a 1967 novel by Australian author Joan Lindsay, who claimed the story came to her in a dream. The novel’s eerie ambiguity and dreamlike quality were cemented in cultural memory by Peter Weir’s acclaimed 1975 film adaptation, which became a landmark of Australian cinema. Over the decades, the story has inspired multiple stage versions, including a notable 2016 play production by Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne. This musical adaptation was first developed at the Hayes Theatre in Sydney, Australia in 2023, and has received several concert performances and rehearsed readings, most recently receiving a concert and Orchestration Workshop at the Lincoln Center in May 2025. The full production now comes to the Greenwich House Theater for its off-Broadway Premiere for a strictly limited run.

Picnic at Hanging Rock: The Musical Creative Team

The book and lyrics are by award-winning Australian playwright Hilary Bell, whose previous credits include Wolf Lullaby, Summer of Harold, and Fortune. Music and arrangements are composed by Greta Gertler Gold, whose credits include The Red Tree, Triplight and The Real Whisper. 

The production is directed by Portia Krieger (Dido of Idaho, The Tomb of King Tot), with choreography by Mayte Natalio (Suffs, How to Dance in Ohio). 

The production also incorporates consultation and collaboration with First Nations Australian artists, to ensure that Indigenous Australian perspectives are authentically and respectfully brought into the story, with Nick Harvey-Doyle providing First Nations dramaturgy for the production.
