What Is the Play Pre-Existing Condition About?

Pre-Existing Condition follows A, a woman dealing with the aftermath of violence committed against her by an ex-boyfriend. As A navigates the reality of this life-altering relationship and the everyday indignities that come with it, she tells friends and family about the situation, seeks advice from therapists and lawyers, and tries to date again. This critically acclaimed play explores the effects of intimate partner violence and the power of finding community in the wake of trauma, and stars a rotating cast of women as A, who perform script-in-hand, to show the universality of the experience.

The History of Pre-Existing Condition 

Pre-Existing Condition first premiered at the Connelly Theatre Upstairs in 2024 to critical acclaim, and was selected as a New York Times Critics’ Pick, with the rotating cast including Falco, playwright and director Marin Ireland and Maria Dizzia, and Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany. The production now returns to NYC for a strictly limited run.

The Creative Team of Pre-Existing Condition 

Pre-Existing Condition is written by Marin Ireland. Ireland is a Tony and an Independent Spirit Award-nominated actor and writer. Pre-Existing Condition is Ireland’s playwriting debut, and draws on her own experience of intimate partner violence.

Maria Dizzia directs. Dizzia is a Tony-nominated actor and director. Her directing credits include The Loneliest Number, The Hurricane Party, and the original 2024 premiere of Pre-Existing Condition.
