It’s the blazing hot summer of 1987, and 18-year-old Ana Garcia dreams of escaping from her hometown of East Los Angeles for college in New York. But money is tight, and Ana is the only US citizen in her family of Mexican immigrants. When her family’s struggling garment business receives a make-or-break order, Ana has to juggle her commitment to her family and her community with her educational ambitions, along with the weight of her overbearing, body-shaming mother's expectations. Will Ana follow in her family's footsteps, or set out on her own path?Real Women Have Curves: The Musical is based on the 1993 play of the same name by Josefina López, which was previously adapted into a hit film in 2002, starring America Ferrara in her feature film debut. In 2019, the film adaptation was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” - and was the first film by a Latina director to be inducted.
Uplifting and funny, the musical tackles important issues surrounding the experience of undocumented immigrants, body positivity and mother-daughter relationships. It premiered at the American Repertory Theater and received glowing reviews. You won't want to miss this “funny, spirited, and joyous celebration of the power of family and community.” (Broadway World).
