What is the musical The Rocky Horror Show about?
The Rocky Horror Show follows clean-cut couple Brad and Janet, who stumble upon a mysterious mansion after their car breaks down. Hoping to use the phone, they instead discover a house of outrageous characters led by the flamboyant and seductive Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Before the night is through, Brad and Janet are thrust into a whirlwind of desire, music, mad science and a whole lot of fishnets. With a cast of unforgettable characters including Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia and the man-made muscle Rocky, this is a riotous musical where nothing is as it seems.
Since its debut, The Rocky Horror Show has been the ultimate celebration of self-expression and gender fluidity. It’s a genre-bending mash-up of B-movie tropes, glam rock, and camp cabaret that invites audiences to shout, dance, and dress up. This new Broadway revival leans into its party atmosphere, with immersive touches that bring audiences into the madness. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, this is one ride worth taking.
The History of the Rocky Horror Show
Originally written by Richard O’Brien and premiering in London in 1973, The Rocky Horror Show was a love letter to classic horror and sci-fi, wrapped in punk and sequins. Its popularity exploded when it was adapted into the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1975, starring Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter. The movie remains the longest-running theatrical release in film history, thanks to weekly midnight screenings around the world.
On stage, The Rocky Horror Show has enjoyed countless productions in over 30 countries and has been seen by more than 40 million people. In 2001, it was revived on Broadway with a starry cast including Alice Ripley and Daphne Rubin-Vega, snagging the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. The musical’s influence on pop culture and LGBTQ+ representation cannot be overstated - “fresh, subversive, and essential.” (Daily Telegraph), Rocky Horror was proudly queer before that was widely accepted, and the show still stands as a banner for outsiders everywhere.
