Based on Joel Schumaker's film of the same name, The Lost Boys: The Musical follows brothers Michael and Sam Emerson, as they move to the fictional Californian town of Santa Carla with their recently divorced mother. While Sam falls in with the quirky Frog brothers - comic book nerds and self-proclaimed vampire hunters - Michael falls for the enigmatic Star, who spends most of her time with a local gang, headed by charismatic bad-boy David. Desperate to get close to Star, Michael becomes embroiled with the gang, but after spending an eerie night with the “Lost Boys” he notices himself starting to change. He has become sensitive to sunlight, and developed a strange craving for blood…The original 1987 movie starred Kiefer Sutherland as David and has since become a cult classic, spawning sequels and being adapted into a novel and comic books. It also won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and the award for Best Horror Film by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. A fun and youthful take on the vampire genre, The Lost Boys inspired subsequent vampire films and TV shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries and What We Do in the Shadows.
This new musical adaptation promises to thrill both die-hard fans of the original movie and a new audience of theatregoers, using vampirism as an exploration sexual awakening and the changes that come with being a teenager - just with a lot more blood.
