What Is Spring Awakening About?

Set in a stifling 19th-century repression, Spring Awakening focuses on a group of adolescents who are struggling with their sexuality, identity, and the strict expectations set by the adults. The History of Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening is based on a play by Frank Wedekind, which was published in 1891. The musical made its Broadway debut twenty years ago, in 2006, at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, winning a multitude of awards, including eight Tony Awards. Subsequent productions took place in London as well as the last Broadway revival in 2015.
