Boys from the Blackstuff Tickets On Sale Now

40 years after Alan Bleasdale’s landmark series aired on television, a powerful theatrical adaptation of Boys from the Blackstuff is in the West End. Award-winning playwright James Graham’s (Sherwood) “blistering” (Financial Times) production premiered with a sold-out season in Liverpool and now comes to the Garrick Theatre for a limited time only.

Fans of the original series shouldn’t miss this “ambitious and timely” (The Stage) play, which brings the lives of working-class Liverpudlians to life with a compulsive mix of humour, heart and incisive rage.

About Boys from the Blackstuff

In 1980s Liverpool, Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie and Yosser have never shied away from hard work to provide for their families. The trouble is, there is no work and they can’t make enough money. They could work harder, for longer hours, and be thrifty with their pay packets, but what they really need is a break.

Alan Bleasdale’s BAFTA-winning television series is widely regarded as one of the best British television shows of the 20th century. Its depiction of unemployment and working-class communities balances bleak humour with warmth as six men and their families navigate a world that seems built for the rich. On stage, it is as resonant as ever, in a production that earned four and five-star reviews at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre.

Creative Team

Olivier Award-winning playwright James Graham adapts Boys from the Blackstuff, drawing on a keen understanding of politics, class and national identity that made This House, Dear England and BBC drama Sherwood instant hits.

Alongside director Kate Wasserberg, their production earned top reviews from critics, who raved that it “had Merseyside on its feet” (The Telegraph) with a “resonant update” (i News) that fans will love.
