The story of Tevye’s struggle to hold fast to his Jewish faith as prejudice rocks his community and his daughters look to forge their own paths is a sparkling classic that sees tradition, modernity and love collide with joyous results. It joins previous musicals including Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar as the standout finale to the Open Air Theatre’s season, so say farewell to summer with a Broadway classic this year!

What is Fiddler on the Roof about?

In 1905 in the small village of Anatevka, Jewish milkman Tevye lives his life true to long-held traditions. Chief amongst these is a visit from a matchmaker for each of his five daughters. They, however, have other ideas! As each young woman challenges their father’s beliefs and tries to find their own way in a changing world, can Tevye hold onto his roots, or will he have to bend to his children's wishes and learn to embrace the new and unfamiliar?

Featuring fantastic and catchy songs including “If I Were A Rich Man”, “Tradition”, “Matchmaker” and “Sunrise, Sunset”, this classic musical is an exuberant and touching celebration of love, life, community and revolution. It has been a popular favourite for theatregoers since its Broadway debut in the 1960s and has won several awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Fiddler on the Roof has a book by Joseph Stein (Zorba), music by Pulitzer Prize winner Jerry Bock and lyrics by Bock’s collaborator Sheldon Harnick. Jordan Fein directs the Regent’s Park revival, following his work as an Associate Director on the Young Vic’s hit production of Oklahoma!.
