Giant Tickets

Harold Pinter Theatre

Opens 26th April

John Lithgow is magnetic as Roald Dahl in this smart and provocative drama, transferring to the West End after a sold-out world premiere.

Provocative Drama With Giant Play Tickets

Direct from a sold-out world premiere at the Royal Court, John Lithgow reprises his performance as Roald Dahl in Giant at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Mark Rosenblatt’s “gripping and thoughtful” (Time Out) play, set over one afternoon, digs into an antisemitism scandal that casts a shadow over Dahl’s legacy as a beloved children’s author. Boasting a “riveting” (WhatsOnStage) turn from Lithgow alongside a smart and thoughtful script, this was one of the most talked-about new plays of the last season.

What is the play Giant about?

In 1983, shortly before the release of his latest book The Witches, Roald Dahl is at the centre of a storm. An article he published has been blasted with accusations of antisemitism, but he’s refusing to back down and apologise. Over one tense afternoon, Dahl and those around him are caught in a battle of wills. Should he publicly recant his comments, or should he stand by them and risk ruining his reputation?

Packed with thought-provoking discussion about the junction between opinion, discrimination and whether a line can be drawn between the two, Giant is a compelling and darkly funny reappraisal of one of the UK’s most celebrated writers.

John Lithgow as Roald Dahl in Giant

Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning actor John Lithgow (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Crown) stars as Roald Dahl in Giant, after originating the role at the Royal Court. His magnetic and uncanny performance will trick you into believing Dahl himself is on stage, backing his views to the hilt; this is a conversation-starting turn from Lithgow that deserves to be seen.

Creative Team

Giant is the debut work from director-turned-writer Mark Rosenblatt, who was inspired by reports of Roald Dahl’s books being retrospectively edited to remove offensive content. Sharp, funny and provocative, his script is directed by Olivier Award-winner Nicholas Hytner (Guys & Dolls, One Man, Two Guvnors).

Reviews for Mark Rosenblatt’s Giant

During its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre, Giant was a huge hit with audiences and critics, who called it a “slowly brilliant” (The Guardian) play that is “shocking, challenging [...] spectacularly good” (The Evening Standard).

With its “powerful and poignant” (West End Best Friend) themes about separating art and artist, this is a play that doesn’t shy away from tackling politics on stage - perfect for anyone who loves drama that raises difficult questions and prompts reflection as much as entertainment.
