Book Hansel and Gretel Tickets for a Christmas Treat

Follow the breadcrumbs into Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for a Christmas treat the whole family can gobble up! Poet Laureate Simon Armitage’s epic new version of Hansel and Gretel transforms the venue with music, magical storytelling and a hopeful message that will sweep you up in adventure and warm your cockles, whether you’re 5, 55 or 105.

About Hansel and Gretel

This Grimm’s fairytale is as familiar as Santa’s sleigh bells to most of us! Siblings Hansel and Gretel are led into the woods by their parents, who think it is safer to leave them alone there than keep them in the rubbles and remains of their war-torn village. The two youngsters are left to fend for themselves, and their plan to find their way back home is soon interrupted by a trail of delicious sweet treats that lead to a mysterious old lady’s cottage…

In Simon Armitage’s beautiful new version of the classic tale, words spring through the frosty air with rhythm and rhyme, just like a parent telling their child a bedtime story - or a group sitting around the fire and sharing folk tales. The play features music and songs to engage all ages, and by the time Hansel and Gretel have found their way home, you will be completely under the spell of this enchanting show.

Hansel and Gretel at the Globe Theatre Creative Team

Simon Armitage is one of the UK’s most famous and beloved poets and was appointed Poet Laureate in 2019. Hansel and Gretel is not the only work he has written that is inspired by mythology and fairytales: his poetry collections include a translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and in 2014 he wrote The Last Days of Troy, which premiered at the Globe Theatre.

This charming Christmas show is directed by Nick Bagnall, who has worked extensively with Shakespeare’s Globe on a number of open-air productions including Love Labour’s Lost, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Henry VI parts 1, 2 and 3, The Death of King Arthur and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
