This fresh new production of Macbeth comes to the Lyric Hammersmith following a nationwide tour in 2023. Visceral and vibrant, Richard Twyman’s direction firmly places Shakespeare’s powerful play in the 21st century, giving audiences a Macbeth that speaks to world we live in today. This cautionary tale speaks across the centuries and asks: what we can learn from this timeless tragedy?

What is the play Macbeth about?

“I think our country sinks beneath the yoke. It weeps, it bleeds, and each new day a gash is added to her wounds.”

When three witches prophesise that Macbeth will become the new king of Scotland, he and his wife take matters into their own hands, killing the old king so Macbeth can take his place. But power corrupts, paranoia runs wild, and as the pair commit more murders to cover their tracks, guilt begins to gnaw away at them…

This fresh, “dagger sharp” (The Times) new production reimagines Shakespeare’s tragic story of corruption and desire, bringing it into the modern day and setting it against the backdrop of a struggling nation rife with CCTV surveillance and paranoia. “Spiked throughout with inspired touches” (The Times), the show uses CCTV records and camera effects to heighten and evoke the struggle for power in a divided country.

Macbeth at the Lyric Hammersmith is produced by English Touring Theatre. Originally a co-production by ETT, Shakespeare North Playhouse, Northern Stage and Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, in association with Bristol Old Vic, Macbeth toured the UK in 2023 to critical acclaim.

Who are the cast and creatives of Macbeth?

Macbeth stars Alex Austin (I Hate Suzie, Ivan and the Dogs, As You Like It) in the titular role, opposite Scottish BAFTA nominee Lois Chimimba (Wonderland, Three Sisters, Cold Water) as Lady Macbeth, with further casting to be announced.

Olivier Award-winning and Drama Desk-nominated director Richard Twyman helms the production. Twyman is the Artistic Director of the English Touring Theatre Company, was previously Associate Director (International) at the Royal Court, and spent five years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, directing fourteen productions. His directing work includes Henry IV Part II (RSC), You For Me For You (Royal Court) and Othello (Tobacco Factory Theatre).
