Dive into a world of prophecy, secrets and the limits of free will as Academy Award winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Olivier Award winner Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) star in a revelatory new version of Oedipus. Sophocles’ ancient tragedy is renewed in this intimate and fierce production from Olivier Award winner Ella Hickson, which plays at the Old Vic Theatre for a strictly limited season.

About Oedipus

The murder of old King Laius is a cold case, but according to the Oracle, once the perpetrator has been caught all will be well. The citizens turn to their new king, Oedipus, for guidance; he solved the riddle of the Sphinx, after all. Oedipus vows to hunt down the killer and usher in their new era of salvation, no matter the cost. But what will he uncover in his determined pursuit of the truth, and what lurks within the labyrinth of fear and love he is about to enter?

Ancient Greek tragedy Oedipus is one of the most famous plays of all time, and its harrowing story of broken relationships and twists of fate never fails to have audiences on the edge of their seats.

This new version is by Ella Hickson (The Writer; Anna; Wendy & Peter Pan), and co-directed by Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical; Groundhog Day) and Tony Award-nominated choreographer Hofesh Shechter (Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway). Together, they bring fresh excitement to the tale at one of London’s most dynamic producing theatres.

Indira Varma and Rami Malek in Oedipus

The twisted relationship at the heart of Oedipus flourishes on stage thanks to award-winning duo Rami Malek, as Oedipus, and Indira Varma, as Jocasta.

Malek is an Oscar winner for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, with other credits including James Bond film No Time to Die.

Varma is no stranger to playing towering female roles on stage, having recently starred opposite Ralph Fiennes as Lady Macbeth in Liverpool and Washington, DC. She was last at the Old Vic in Present Laughter opposite Andrew Scott, for which she earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Her television credits include Game of Thrones and Luther.
