Charing Cross Theatre welcomes you to beautiful, foreboding Manderley for the English language premiere of the magnificent Rebecca musical. This gripping adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel is a long-awaited treat for London theatre audiences, as it has previously only been staged in Europe.

About the Rebecca Musical

When wealthy widower Maxim de Winter meets a young woman in Monte Carlo, they soon marry and return to his Cornish estate, where the resentful housekeeper Mrs Danvers waits. Faced with endless stories of Maxim’s glamorous first wife Rebecca, who died in a tragic accident, the shadows of the past threaten to suffocate the new Mrs de Winter’s future.

Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca is one of the most popular gothic thrillers of all time, beloved for its eerie atmosphere and startling twists and turns. This stunning musical adaptation, by German-language composers Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, premiered in Vienna in 2006 and has captivated European audiences for years.

This new English translation is by Christopher Hampton (Sunset Boulevard) with Michael Kunze, directed by Alejandro Bonatto and features an orchestra of 18 performing 22 mesmerising original songs. Du Maurier’s captivating tale of a woman haunted by the past is a stunning theatrical experience.

A Beloved Classic Brought to the Stage

Rebecca has long captured our imaginations, and was immortalised on screen in Alfred Hitchcock’s incredible film adaptation. The gothic themes, atmospheric descriptions and bold characters seemed destined to flourish on stage, and in 2006 a German-language musical premiered at Raimund Theatre in Vienna. It has remained very popular on the continent since this initial three-year run, and has been seen by audiences in several countries including Sweden, Finland, Germany, Serbia and Hungary.

Christopher Hampton’s English-language adaptation has been workshopped several times over the last decade. It most famously went on sale on Broadway in 2013, before being cancelled. London audiences now have the chance to be the first to experience Rebecca in the UK.

Such a beautiful production with the limitations of this small theatre! Absolutely adored it and easily one of the best vocals I've heard in musical theatre. Really hoping this musical will return in the future with a bigger scale production.

I enjoyed the show immensely (and I did not go with high expectations). The cast was strong, the music (and the orchestra) was really lush, and the story was gripping. This was a more 'old school'-style musical which works for the show's setting. The Read more
