The Taming of the Shrew Tickets On Sale Now!

Step into the middle of a bewildering carnival at the Globe Theatre this summer! The witty and brutal comedy The Taming of the Shrew, one of the most controversial Shakespeare plays, is back on stage and ready to charm and challenge all at once. The inspiration for ‘90s rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You and Golden Age musical Kiss Me, Kate is a wild story of sexual politics, power and romance that has as many lovers as haters. Not sure what side you’re on? Book your tickets now and decide when you watch this brand-new production.

What is The Taming of the Shrew about?

Lucentio has his heart set on one thing: the beautiful Bianca’s hand in marriage. Nothing is simple, however, and her father has declared that she can only marry once her older sister is also betrothed. So begins the competition to turn Katherina from a fiercely independent and hot-headed young woman into a perfect, obedient wife, and Petruchio thinks he is the man for the job. But Katherina is proud, and he soon realises it will take extreme levels of manipulation to make her his bride…

Shakespeare’s famous battle of the sexes comedy is both hilarious and vicious, with one woman’s independence at the centre of an absurd series of events. This playful but challenging story will have you wondering where the line between entertainment and complicity lies… and whether we have crossed it.

Cast & Creatives

Director Jude Christian returns to the Globe to explore the contradictions and thorny questions that make this early comedy so compelling and divisive, following her “brilliantly provocative” (The Guardian) staging of blood-soaked tragedy Titus Andronicus in 2022. She is joined by designer Rosie Elnile and composer Corin Buckeridge, with casting to be confirmed.

This is one of Shakespeare’s plays which is now problematic in modern times. This was a bold way of dealing with that, with absurdist costumes and set, and no apologetic glossing over of the gaslighting. Always an enjoyable romp at the Globe: conti Read more
