What Is the Play A Few Good Men About?
Daniel Kaffree is a military lawyer renowned for his charm, sharp wit and skill at closing cases before they reach trial. But when Kaffree is assigned to the defence of two young marines, who have been accused of murdering a fellow private, his usual tactics for snagging a plea bargain are disrupted by his co-counsel, whip-smart lawyer Lt. Commander JoAnne Galloway, who is determined to clear the boys' names, but suspects there may be more to the story. When evidence leads to a cover-up, the pair are soon set on an explosive collision course with the entire chain of command. Will the truth win out, or will a system built on obedience and secrecy overrule what is right?
The History of A Few Good Men
A Few Good Men first premiered on Broadway in 1989, earning a nomination for Best Actor at the 44th annual Tony Awards. The play was inspired by a conversation Sorkin had with his sister, a law graduate, about her experience visiting Guantanamo Bay, and a real-life case similar to that depicted.
Sorkin later developed the play into a movie alongside director Rob Reiner and William Goldman, who provided an uncredited rewrite on some scenes, which Sorkin liked enough to also incorporate into future versions of the play script. The movie was released in 1992 and starred Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore and Tom Cruise. A critical and commercial success, the movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. This brand new production marks the play’s first major revival in the US in almost three decades.
