What Is the Play Downstate About?
Set in a registered address in Downstate Illinois, the play centres on four men who have been convicted of sex crimes against minors and live within the pressure-cooker atmosphere of a group home owned by the state. When a man shows up at the residence to confront his childhood abuser unexpectedly, a catastrophic chain reaction amongst the men and the visitors occurs.
The History of Downstate
Downstate made its world premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, in a co-production with London’s National Theatre in 2018. During its premiere, it was accused of promoting pedophilia. However, the play drummed up critical acclaim from critics and won several awards, including an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play. Downstate had a subsequent run at the National Theatre and was last performed in New York City at the Playwrights Horizons in 2022.
