    What is Fire Shut Up in My Bones about?

    Fire Shut Up in My Bones tells the story of a young African-American Charles Blow, who lives in Louisiana with a struggling family as they navigate through poverty. The audience is taken through Blow’s life, from his childhood in the 1970s to his adulthood in the 1990s, whilst he learns about himself and experiences pain, loneliness and bitterness.

    The opera is based on Charles Blow’s memoir and intertwines jazz and gospel into three acts. Audiences will be moved by Blow’s story and the intricate use of the musical genres embedded throughout.

    Fire Shut Up in My Bones Cast and Creative Team

    Ryan Speedo Green is a bass-baritone opera singer who brings Charles Blow to the stage and has also portrayed the lead role in Blanchard’s first opera, Champion. Alongside Green is Latonia Moore, who plays Charles’ mother, Billie. Moore first debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012 and has since been awarded three Grammys for recordings of productions she has appeared in.

    The opera's creator Terence Blanchard rose to fame as a musician and composer, working on the scores of many films and frequently collaborating with director Spike Lee. Blanchard was exposed to opera from a young age, with his father being a part-time opera singer.

    Blanchard has won 5 Grammy awards and has been recognized for his work by the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. Notably, he received a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 2023 for the recording of Fire Shut Up in My Bones at the Metropolitan Opera.

    The History of Fire Shut Up in My Bones

    Fire Shut Up in My Bones is Grammy award-winning composer, Terence Blanchard’s, second opera. Based on the memoir of Charles Blow, an American journalist, the opera made its debut in 2019 in Saint Louis and went on to open the Metropolitan Opera’s 2021-2022 season. It made history as the first opera by an African-American composer to be performed at the venue.

    The opera was recorded as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s live film series. The recording was awarded a Grammy in 2023 for Best Opera Recording and has gone on to receive many incredible reviews, along with touring around the country.
