What Is the Musical Midnight About?
In the 19th-century American South, the lives of 12 characters intersect through moments of love, loss, and prejudice. When an enslaved young man forms a friendship with his wealthy white neighbour, the boundaries between what separates them begin to blur. Blending hip-hop, opera, rock, r&b, pop, folk music and gospel with contemporary musical theatre, the show takes a powerful look at how although we don’t choose the roles we’re born into, we can choose who we become.
The History of Midnight
Following development in NYC and London, Midnight premiered to audiences as a fully staged workshop at Sadler’s Wells East, London, in 2025, followed by a second, updated workshop in 2026. The show now makes its Off-Broadway premiere for a limited run.

The Creative Team of Midnight
Midnight is written, directed and choreographed by Todrick Hall. Hall is a singer, choreographer, actor and YouTuber. He first rose to fame on American Idol, and has appeared as a choreographer and judge on RuPaul's Drag Race. As a performer, he has appeared in Kinky Boots and Chicago on Broadway and Burlesque the Musical in London, for which he also co-wrote songs.
Music supervision, arrangements, co-orchestration, and music direction are by Laurence Stannard (Hamilton, Parade), with co-orchestration by Mark Crossland (9 to 5, I’m Every Woman).
