An intimate story about conflicted loyalties meets some of the most gripping music in the operatic canon for Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera. This tense production will have you hooked at the Metropolitan Opera House and is made all the more unmissable by its world-class creative team led by David Alden.

What is Un Ballo in Maschera about?

The walls between public and private crumble and friendships are shattered in Un Ballo in Maschera (or, The Masked Ball), as a Swedish king's love for his friend's wife sparks his demise. Prophetic warnings of assassination plots are ignored, but will the ultimate betrayal come from someone much closer to home?

Political intrigue and illicit affairs are the beating heart of this high-stakes opera, based on the true story of King Gustav III of Sweden, who was assassinated by a political enemy in 1792 whilst attending a masked ball at Stockholm's Royal Opera House. Fears of censorship and political unrest in Europe meant Verdi's story was transported to Boston, but opera houses have reimagined its timeless tale in various locations.

Un Ballo in Maschera Composer

Un Ballo in Maschera is Italian composer Verdi's 23rd opera; he wrote a total of 28 during his illustrious career including Otello, La Traviata and Aida. In this mid-career epic, Verdi's beautiful choral writing is on display, alongside passionate emotional outpouring and stunning vocals.

It returns to the Met Opera for the first time since 2015, in a new production by David Alden, conducted by Carlo Rizzi. Alden is an Olivier Award-winning director best known for his post-modernist interpretations and politically-charged worked with the English National Opera.

His vision of Un Ballo in Maschera was last at the Met eight years ago, and although considered controversial in its staging and interpretation at the time, remains a powerful modern take on a story that transcends time and location.
