About Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra

Rome and Egypt: an empire ruled by men and a kingdom governed by a woman, just a sea apart from each other. Despite their different cultures, Roman general Antony falls in love with Queen Cleopatra. Their passionate affair cannot stay a secret, however, and soon the effects ripple across two continents, upsets the world order, endangers thousands of lives, and ends in tragedy.

Shakespeare’s blazing play about two cultures clashing on the battlefield of love is a heartstopping story that merges history and fiction to stunning effect; if you think you know Cleopatra, get ready to witness her in an astounding new way in one of the greatest plays ever written.

A Ground-breaking New Version at the Globe

Spoken English and BSL are performed together on stage in a ground-breaking production from director Blanche McIntrye. Expect fireworks from McIntrye, who is a seasoned Shakespeare director with credits including All’s Well That Ends Well, Titus Andronicus and The Two Noble Kinsmen at the RSC; and Measure for Measure; The Winter’s Tale and As You Like It at the Globe Theatre.

BSL Consultant Daryl Jackson collaborates with McIntrye to creatively integrate British Sign Language and Spoken English throughout the performance.

The cast includes Nadia Nadarajah as Cleopatra. Nadarajah appeared at the Globe as Celia in As You Like It (2018) and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the Broadway World UK Awards for her performance.
