What Is the Sylvia Musical About?
Activist, rebel, icon, and now musical theatre star: Sylvia Pankhurst is one of history’s most important figures. As her mum and sister battled for women’s right to vote, Sylvia turned her attention to everyone who’d been forgotten. Her solidarity with the working class turned into a battle between family and beliefs - and she risked everything to bring suffrage to everyone.
Sylvia takes the story of a rebel at the beating heart of the Suffragette movement, and turns it into an exhilarating musical manifesto that fuses hip hop, dance, soul and one almighty rallying cry. It premiered at the Old Vic in 2023 and was nominated for three Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.

Beverley Knight returns to Sylvia for this new run, playing Emmeline Pankhurst. Knight won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for her performance at the Old Vic.

Sylvia has an electric score by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, taking inspiration from hip hop, funk and soul music. It is directed and choreographed by Kate Prince. Prince is best known for her work on ZooNation’s Message in a Bottle, and her take on classic shows with a contemporary hip hop twist including Some Like it Hip Hop, Into the Hoods, and The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
