Catherine Tate and David Threlfall take on the supernatural in the world premiere of spooky new play The Enfield Haunting. Based on true events, Paul Unwin’s (Casualty) play is the story of a single mother whose home became host to a disturbing poltergeist in the late 1970s. Packed with chills, surprises and haunting questions, this major new show celebrates its world premiere at the Ambassadors Theatre this year.

What is The Enfield Haunting about?

The Hodgsons couldn’t have told you what a poltergeist was until, in the summer of 1977, furniture and toys in their home mysteriously started moving around. This ordinary working-class family living in a North London council house was suddenly at the epicentre of one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world. Over almost a year, events built up, until one night in the spring of 1978…

Based on first-hand accounts from one of the ghost hunters involved, The Enfield Haunting is the true story of a single mother who did everything to protect her children from something she couldn’t see coming, all the way to its terrifying conclusion.

The True Story of The Enfield Haunting

The incomprehensible true story that inspired this fantastic new play took place between 1977 and 1979 at 284 Green Street, Enfield. Following alleged supernatural activity focused on 11-year-old Janet and 13-year-old Margaret Hodgson, ghost hunters and paranormal experts descended on the property and a debate about what was really happening unfolded. The case captured the public’s imagination and was reported in the news, and fans of horror films will recognise it as the subject of The Conjuring 2.

The Enfield Haunting is an exciting dramatisation of what happened, and what might have happened, with the real people at the heart of this astounding event taking centre stage amidst all the thrills and moments to make you jump!
