Duke of York's Theatre

Following a sell-out run at the Royal Court Theatre, The Nether transfers to the West End at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Jennifer Haley’s play is a deeply disturbing psychological thriller that tugs at the audience’s sense of humanity in future world filled with dark technological advances.

The Nether is a dark and disturbing psychological thriller from American Playwright Jennifer Haley. Presented by the Royal Court Theatre and Headlong, The Nether sold out its run at the Royal Court before transferring to the Duke of York’s Theatre in February 2015.

Set in 2050, The Nether tells the tale of a scarily dystopian future in which people can log into "The Nether", a virtual reality rather a like a very advanced internet. People can live life through avatars they create, even allowing them to see and smell as these Nether world creations.

Whilst The Nether sounds like a dreamland, it is also home to many dark and depraved fantasies, allowing paedophiles the ability to carry out their sick desires in places such as “The Hideaway” - a ranch like place where users can fulfil their yearnings. Whilst places like The Hideaway exist only in The Nether, a detective investigating what we would call the dark web questions the ethics of such a place, even if it is not real.

The Nether features incredible set design by Es Devlin, which truly brings to life the dreamlike world of The Nether. Directed by Jeremy Herrin and produced by Sonia Friedman, The Nether was nominated for an Oliver Award for Best New Play.
