A Soldier's Play on Broadway Tickets

Todd Haimes Theatre

Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize winning A Soldier’s Play makes its long-awaited Broadway debut. This timely and urgent thriller about racism and justice in the US Army runs at the American Airlines Theatre from December 27 2019.

After thrilling audiences Off-Broadway and earning playwright Charles Fuller a Pulitzer Prize, A Soldier’s Play is set to make its Broadway debut at the American Airlines Theatre. This masterful work about racism and justice in the US Army was first staged in 1981, when it won Outer Critics Circle and Obie awards.

Set in 1944 Louisiana, the play follows army investigator Captain Richard Davenport as he investigates the murder of black Sergeant Vernon Waters. Facing a race against time – and the majority white leadership at the Army Base – Davenport exposes systemic racism and internalized prejudice with razor sharp precision.

The original production of A Soldier’s Play featured Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. On Broadway, three-time Tony and Grammy Award nominee David Alan Grier (The First; Dreamgirls) is set to play Sergeant Waters, with Blair Underwood (Netflix: Dear White People; Broadway: A Streetcar Named Desire) joining him as Captain Davenport.

Playwright Charles Fuller is a recent recipient of the Dramatists Guild’s Flora Roberts Award, topping off a career that includes an Obie and a Pulitzer Prize. His other works include Zooman and the Sign.

A Soldier’s Play at the American Airlines Theatre is directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun; American Son) with costumes by Dede Ayite, set design by Derek McLane and lighting by Allen Lee Hughes.

With a cut-throat mystery at its center and a sharp, nuanced dissection of institutional injustice throughout, A Soldier’s Play on Broadway is a long-awaited production. It begins previews on December 27 2019.

Maybe an unpopular and unfair opinion. I left at intermission because they're all talking so fast I couldn't understand half of it. Maybe it's a great play, it just tired me out.
