Legendary Oscar and Tony Award-winning actress Dame Angela Lansbury returns to London’s West End for the first time in almost forty years. Reuniting with director Michael Blakemore (Kiss Me, Kate), Lansbury reprises her 2009 Tony Award-winning role as Madame Arcati in Noel Coward’s inimitably hilarious Blithe Spirit.

Originally opening in the West End in 1941, Blithe Spirit is a darkly comic farce that follows Charles Condomine as he invites the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to his house for a séance. Trapping Charles in a trance, Madame Arcati accidentally summons the ghost of his dead wife Elvira, who is less than happy that Charles has since married new wife Ruth. Bit by bit, Elvira begins to wreak havoc at the séance, causing a series of troublesome events that eventually become life threatening. Soon, it’s up to Charles and Madame Arcati to extricate the naughty spook, and fast!

Starring as Madame Arcati, Angela Lansbury has a stage and screen career that has spanned decades. A household name, she has won 5 Tony Awards and 6 Golden Globes, appearing in iconic musicals such as Sweeney Todd, Gypsy and A Little Night Music. Her extensive screen credits include Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Beauty and the Beast, Murder She Wrote and Anastacia. Further cast members include Janie Dee (Mack & Mabel, Carousel) as Ruth Condomine, Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey) as Charles Condomine, Jemima Rooper (One Man, Two Guvnors) as Elvira, Sandra Dickinson as Mrs Bradman, Simon Jones as Doctor George Bradman and Patsy Ferran as Edith.

Written by Noel Coward, Blithe Spirit is the other-worldly comedy, directed by Broadway’s Michael Blakemore, with design by Simon Higlett and lighting design by Mark Jonathan. A sure-fire hit, Blithe Spirit is the wildly entertaining play that sees Angela Lansbury return to an award-winning role after decades away from a London stage. Blithe Spirit opens at the Gielgud Theatre in March 2014 for a limited season only.
