Dead Dog in a Suitcase Tickets

Lyric Hammersmith

Closes Saturday 15th June

Kneehigh's lauded Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs) overhauls The Beggar’s Opera in a superb production full of physical theatre and music.

The 1728 satirical The Beggar’s Opera by John Gay gets a major overhaul in Kneehigh’s acclaimed production of Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs), complete with talented actor-musicians and an updated score.

Social injustice and corruption are rife in the world where contract killer Macheath marries the young Polly Peachum, but her parents are none too happy about it. Their plans to save their daughter and profit at the same time kick off a weird and wonderful morality tale with movement and music.

Kneehigh have been making their distinct brand of popular theatre for over 30 years, catering to a wide variety of tastes. Proudly based in Cornwall, they are inspired by the Cornish landscape and people, and were founded by Mike Shepherd, who is the company’s Artistic Director to this day. He directs this production.

Carl Grose, who wrote the script, has worked with Kneehigh for the past 17 years. Previous credits with the company include Tristan & Yseult, The Wind-Up Boy and The Bacchae. Charles Hazelwood is credited with composition and musical direction, Etta Murfitt choreographs, and Michale Vale and Malcolm Rippeth provide design and lighting.

Dominic Marsh stars as Macheath alongside Rina Fatania as Mrs Peachum, Georgia Frost as Filch, Angela Hardie as Polly Peachum and Martin Hyder as Les Peachum. Giles King plays Colin Lockit, Patrycja Kujawska and Lucy Rivers play Widow Goodman and Beverly Rudd plays Lucy Lockitt.

The company’s distinctive style draws on music, puppetry, physical theatre and storytelling to share captivating tales that are relevant to life today, and this show is no different from their high-quality canon. First staged in 2014, Dead Dog in a Suitcase has been revived by the company several times since. Kneehigh shows are always popular and compelling, and the show runs from 21 May 2019, with a press night on 23 May 2019.

This is a really full on show - outstanding singing and music, very creative and inventive staging, a bit bawdy in places but undoubtedly impressive. The cast really throw their all into it. At times I felt like I'd been sent back to the 1980s, but t Read more

I loved this show! It makes such a change from the sugary pap on at the West End, and the cast have invested so much into it! The music and singing are fantastic, it's edgy and inventive - perhaps a bit rough round the edges, and a really valid story Read more
