In the wake of his father’s unexpected death, Michael is overwhelmed by a sense of powerlessness and anger. Faced with difficult truths about his dad’s legacy and the country that shaped him, he decides to stand up at the funeral and give an unannounced, unprepared speech.Starring Thomas Coombes (Baby Reindeer), Death of England: Michael is a searching and scorching monologue told from the point of view of a working-class white British man who finds grief is loaded with uncomfortable questions. Originally performed by Rafe Spall in 2020, it forms the first part of Clint Dyer and Roy Williams’ state-of-the-nation trio of plays.
