What is the musical Girl from the North Country about?

It’s 1934 and in Duluth, Minnesota, a community of troubled souls navigate their way through the Great Depression and a bitter winter. On the shores of Lake Superior, there’s one port in the storm - a guest house where music plays, travellers meet and romances bloom. But the Laine family, who own the guest house, have plenty of problems of their own, with illness, alcoholism, heartbreak, pregnancy and the looming threat of foreclosure from the bank. When some new faces blow into town one stormy night, things for the Laines may just change forever…

Girl from the North Country first premiered at the Old Vic in 2017 to critical acclaim, transferring into the West End in 2018. It has received a Broadway transfer and toured internationally and throughout the UK. The show has won both a Laurence Olivier and a Tony Award and received a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

This “piercingly beautiful” (Independent) show mingles Dylan’s beloved songs with heartwrenching tales of love, loss, hope and soul, redefining what musical theatre can be. “Bewitchingly original. It’s pure stage magic” (Telegraph) - you won’t want to miss it.

Who are the cast of Girl from the North Country?

Casting is to be announced for the revival of Girl from the North Country, but will be comprised of a company of 23 talented actors and musicians.

The original production starred Harry Potter and Trainspotting star Shirley Henderson, Harlots’ Sheila Atim and Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire actor Sam Reid.

Who are the creative team of Girl from the North Country?

Award-winning Irish playwright and screenwriter Conor McPherson both writes and directs. McPherson is an Olivier winner and Tony nominee, and his previous credits include The Weir for the Royal Court and in the West End, The Seafarer at The National Theatre and Port Authority for New York's Atlantic Theater Company.

Music and lyrics are by Bob Dylan. The rock ’ n ’ roll icon surely needs no introduction, but for the uninitiated, Dylan is a singer-songwriter with a career spanning over 70 years. Combining folk, blues and rock and roll, Dylan is one of the most best-selling artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records.

Dylan’s accolades include an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and ten Grammy Awards. He is an inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Kennedy Centre Honours and a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation. In 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". His best known songs include "Blowin' in the Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'”, “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Mr Tambourine Man”.

What Bob Dylan songs are in Girl from the North Country?

Girl from the North Country uses songs spanning the breadth of Dylan’s career - both popular songs and lesser-known tunes alike - and incorporates genuine 1930s instruments, performed live on stage.

Dylan hits reimagined for the musical include "Make You Feel My Love", “Like a Rolling Stone”, "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere", "All Along the Watchtower” and, of course, "Girl from the North Country", as well as many more.

The show also has Dylan’s approval - in a 2020 interview with the New York Times the legendary musician confided that “the play had me crying at the end”.

‘Girl from the North Country’ is a very good production. The music arrangements were a joy to listen to – at times I wondered if I was listening to Bob Dylan as the arrangements were so different. Shirley Henderson in particular has the most amazin Read more
