Great Britain Tickets

Theatre Royal Haymarket

From the writer of One Man Two Guvnor’s comes this satirical new play about the phone hacking scandal. Transferring from the National Theatre after a sell-out run, Great Britain stars Lucy Punch as the ruthless journalist, Paige Britain. Based on the shocking phone hacking scandal, Great Britain is a political satire examining the freedom of the press.

Written by Richard Bean (One Man Two Guvnors), Great Britain was brought to the National Theatre as a surprise by director Nicholas Hytner. Originally starring Billie Piper as Paige Britain, the show was such a success that it received a transfer to the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Great Britain is a new play based on the recent British phone hacking scandal, in which the voicemails on mobile phones of celebrities were tapped into in order to generate news stories. Richard Bean described the play as being an examination of the “state-of-the-nation,” with “press, politics and police in bed with each other.”

Set in a tabloid newsroom, the show focuses on the character of Paige Britain, a ruthless young news editor who would do anything to get a story for tabloid publication, The Free Press. Great Britain also heavily hints at those involved in the scandal such as Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch, as well as presenting various celebrity characters who are regularly attacked by the press.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner as his last production as Artistic Director of the National Theatre, Great Britain features lighting from Neil Austin, video by Leo Warner, music by Grant Olding, sound by Paul Arditti and design by Tim Hatley.
