Armed with costumes, props, and wigs, 12-year-old Rob Madge creates a Disney parade in their living room. Rob confidently plays characters like Mary Poppins, Ariel, Mickey Mouse, and Belle, even though their parents struggle to keep up. Despite their challenges, Rob's parents' unwavering support highlights the importance of encouragement. The History of My Son's A Queer (But What Can You Do?)

My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) makes its stage debut at the Turbine Theatre in 2021, where it won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End. It went on to play at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2021, before having two West End runs at the Garrick and Ambassadors Theatre.

Its transfer to Broadway in 2024 was initially cancelled, with a UK tour taking its place. The rescheduled season at the New York City Center took place in 2025.

The Cast of My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?)

Rob Madge stars in this one-man autobiographical show, My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?). Their theatre credits include Acorn Antiques, Cabaret and Mary Poppins. They have become a seasoned performer in the London Palladium pantomime over the last couple of years and will be starring in this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty.

Madge has also started writing some new productions, including Charley’s Aunt at the Watermill Theatre and Bank of Dave – The Musical, which premieres with a run at The Lowry, Salford and Curve Theatre, Leicester in 2026.

Written by Rob Madge, the show features music composed by Pippa Cleary and lyrics by Madge and Cleary. Pippa Cleary is an acclaimed musical theatre composer, with credits including The Great British Bake Off Musical and The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ The Musical. She’s working with Rob Madge on Bank of Dave – The Musical.
