Arch-surrealist director and writer Anthony Neilson has returned to the Royal Court Theatre with his ground-breaking new play Unreachable.

This new comedy will be formed within the rehearsal room and on stage during previews. Throughout the process, content based on the ideas the company trial and experimented with are posted on the internet, giving audiences a unique insight into the development process and the themes that shape the production.

Unreachable tells the story of a film director who has fallen into an all-consuming journey to find the perfect light.

Anthony Neilson has previously seen huge success at the Royal Court Theatre with a long line of award-winning plays, including The Wonderful World of Dissocia in 2007, which won the Critic’s Award of Theatre in Scotland and the Best Production at the TMA Awards, along with The Censor in 1997, which won a Writer’s Guild Award and a Time Out Award.

Neilson is renowned as a ground-breaking playwright and directory, having established his name with his unique, innovative and engrossing work. With this new experimental piece, he offers up all the rich depth and beautiful poignancy that is expected from a man with his reputation.

Unreachable sees the return of Matt Smith to the Royal Court Theatre, following previous roles in That Face and Fresh Kills. Matt Smith is best known for his role starring in the BBC’s revival of Doctor Who. He is no stranger to the stage however, having played the role of Lockwood in Alan Bennet’s acclaimed The History Boys as well as recently having starred as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre.

Matt Smith is joined by an all-star cast, including Amanda Drew (The Father, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime & Three Days in the Country), Jonjo O’Neil ( Cymbeline, The Get Out & Richard III) and Richard Pyros (Collaboration, The Wild Duck & Mother Courage and Her Children).

Unreachable played at the Royal Court Theatre for five-weeks. The production officially opened on 8th July 2016 and ran until 6th August 2016.

Audience Notes:
Fans of Matt Smith should not miss the chance to see the actor in an incredibly challenging and cutting edge role, something that the actor himself has deemed potentially ‘career suicide’. Those who have seen Anthony Neilson’s work previously will undoubtedly want to return to the Royal Court to see the surrealist director pushing the boundaries of comedy once again.
